I have a deep-seated aversion to New Year’s Resolutions because they’re either telling me to stop doing something I love – which is madness! I already live by the maxim that if I’m not enjoying whatever it may be, stop doing it so I’m not going to start cutting out anything I enjoy because that’s martyrdom from what I can see.
During December 2022, I started up a little list on Letterboxd for a little bit of fun. Originally the idea was to log any of my Blu Rays I watch from my stupidly outsized collection. I already tag anything I watch on the streaming services, so this seemed like a logical step. As I started to gaze upon row after row of blue-topped cases, the logging idea took on an interesting twist – why not watch each shelf in order? I’ll still be able to mix things up. Not everything is in alphabetical order for starters. Some collections (Criterion, HMV Platinum, Indicator etc) are by spine number and as they’re on separate shelves, once I’ve completed one I can switch to starting another.
Most resolutions die an agonising death because they’re so against the grain, but looking through a collection that looks like someone with multiple personality disorder bought it, I’m looking forward to the whole project. I have a sneaky feeling it’ll not die soon…

If you want to get involved then use the hashtag #ShelfChallenge on twitter so we can see what you have been watching.
